about
Silence in the Water is the first of 12 songs to be released each month in 2024. This song started bubbling to the surface in early 2022, after the sudden email I received in late December from my then-music partner and close friend. The finality of her message and the radio silence that ensued spurred this song. It is, in essence, about the gradual disintegration of a close connection to someone - no matter friend, family or partner - that begins with unexpected words, a drop in communication, confusion over why it’s happening, and the inevitability of a great loss. The silence begins to trigger the process of grief, and my song, Silence in the Water, touches upon four of the five stages of grief, particularly denial, anger, bargaining and depression.
lyrics
Beneath the surface, darkness falls
And the words that were so loud
Silence seeps into the hall
When we adorn our idle crown
In the night, the quiet reigns
Down upon my kingdom's hold
And I feel the empty space
Casting shadows upon the cold
Silence in the water
Every word that I could see
Silence in the water
Never came back to me
Silence in the water
A depth that couldn't be
Silence in the water
When the ship sails to open water
It casts the wave beneath the sea
And this echo sounding somber
Waiting for a sign of peace
Silence in the water
Every word that I could see
Silence in the water
Never came back to me
Silence in the water
A depth that couldn't be
Silence in the water
Silence in the water
Silence in the water
